Keep Your Furnace & HVAC in Working Order

Epperson Inc. • Jul 06, 2023

What is the difference between a comfortable home and a home that makes you consider booking a hotel room for some relief? A running furnace and HVAC system. After all, a broken furnace in the winter or a busted HVAC system in the summer can cause your home to feel absolutely and completely uncomfortable! Fortunately, there are several tips to keep your furnace and HVAC in working order so you can avoid having to deal with the worst mother nature has to offer.

Our team at Epperson, Inc. is always here to help keep the essential parts of your home working smoothly. And, if there is a malfunction, we are right there by your side to get it fixed as soon as possible - including your furnace & HVAC system. Here are some of our tips for proper maintenance to keep your system running smoothly.

HVAC Maintenance Tips

If you want to keep your furnace and HVAC in working order, you need to take different steps in the summer than in the winter. This checklist includes:

  1. Inspecting your filters monthly to make sure air is flowing properly, and there are no blockages. We recommend replacing them every 30 to 90 days.
  2. Cleaning outside your air conditioning, including brushing off leaves or any other debris from your outdoor unit, can prolong the life of your system.
  3. Ensure you have lots of room between your greenery and HVAC system to encourage proper airflow.
  4. Remove pollen, grass clippings, dust, and other natural debris from your HVAC compressor by carefully hosing it down.
  5. Try to avoid going to extremes on your HVAC system. If you cause your system to work overtime, there is a higher chance of it running into issues in the future.

Furnace Maintenance Tips

  1. Schedule routine tune-ups to ensure the heat exchanger, fuel lines, burners, valves, and vent pipes are working correctly.
  2. Move any debris away from your furnace and blower to ensure all the registers are open and free from obstructions.
  3. Clean and seal ductwork. Did you know the average American home loses up to 30 percent of heated and cooled air via ductwork breaches? Yikes! By fixing leaky ductwork and airflow obstructions, you can keep your energy bills low and your system working smoothly.
  4. Similar to above, don’t set your thermostat to the highest temperature possible all day long. This will overwork the system. Try turning off your thermostat if you are out of the house for an extended period of time or tune the heat down 1-3 degrees. If you are unsure of how to turn off your furnace, our team is happy to help!
